Iontophoresis
Iontophoresis is a safe, well-documented method of increasing penetration of drug molecules into body tissues. Iontophoresis uses locally applied direct current to deliver ionized medications across the skin.
Iontophoresis solutions available from Family Pharmacy - Aiken's Compounding Pharmacy are applied to iontophoresis electrode pads. The electrode pads containing the medicated solution are attached to the skin and low doses of direct electrical current "push" the drug through the skin.
Electrical current assists the movement of ions across the stratum corneum according to basic electrical principles. Like charges repel each other and opposite charges attract each other.
Medication administered by iontophoresis also transfer the drug accross the skin by passive diffusion. Passive diffusion involves the movement of drug molecules from areas of high concentration (in electrode pads) to areas of low concentration (in skin.)
Dispensing
Iontophoresis Solutions are available in many sizes. We offer individual dose vials, multi-dose bottles from 2 fluid ounces (60 ml) to 16 fluid ounces (480 ml). Please check with your state board to see if multi-dose vials are allowed in your state.
Administration
Iontophoresis solutions are dispensed in plastic bottles with needle-less 3mL syringes that fit into a press-in bottle adapter.
To withdraw the solution:
- Insert the syringe into the press-in bottle adapter
- Invert the bottle
- Pull back on the syringe plunger to get desired amount (usually 1.5 ml to 3 ml depending on electrode size)
- Apply contents of syringe to the treating iontophoresis electrode
- Replace cap top.
Storage
Iontophoresis solutions should be stored in the original containers and out of reach of children. Most solutions, EXCLUDING Ketoprofen and Baclofen, should be stored in the refrigerator. Many therapists keep the solution at room temperature during a busy workday and store the solution in the refrigerator after hours and on the weekends.
